Celebrating National Rose Month
In 1986 President Ronald Reagan declared the month of June as National Rose Month. The American Rose Society invites all its members to find a local library to ‘adopt’ and provide it with rose displays each June. For the second year in a row the Orlando Area Historical Rose Society has adopted the Seminole County Library in Oviedo. Library patrons and staff enjoy the beautiful fresh rose bouquets furnished by our members throughout the month. Rose books, chosen by the librarians, are placed on the display tables, along with membership information for the ARS and the OAHRS. Our society’s consulting rosarian, Tom Burke, presents a one-hour
seminar on rose planting and care in the library’s community activity room. The talk is advertised by a large poster in the lobby and flyers in the display area. Lukas Nursery generously provides containers of old garden roses for use in the
display. Our efforts in providing this month-long display are rewarded by daily thanks from the library staff and comments of appreciation from the patrons.
