The Swamp Rose

The 'Swamp Rose', also known as Rosa palustris, is a shrub in the rose family native to much of eastern North America.

The species epithet palustris is Latin for "of the marsh" and indicates its common habitat.

The 'Swamp Rose' can be found from Nova Scotia and New Brunswick in the north, south to Florida and west to Arkansas and Ontario.

The 'Swamp Rose' blooms once a season, either in spring or early summer, with 3-inch flowers featuring 25 delicate, medium-pink petals. These blooms have a subtle, sweet fragrance and are borne singly on arching branches, giving the plant a graceful, untamed appearance. Bees, butterflies, and other pollinators are drawn to the open-faced flowers, making this rose a valuable addition to wildlife-friendly gardens. The blooms can also be cut for casual arrangements that bring nature indoors.

As its flowering season concludes, R. Palustris 'Swamp Rose' produces vibrant, pea-sized red rose hips that persist through fall. These hips are a feast for songbirds and can also be harvested for making jellies, teas, and other culinary treats. Their bright color adds interest to the garden, extending the plant’s appeal long after the flowers have faded.

True to its name, 'Swamp Rose' thrives in moist, organically rich soils (as well as in normal garden conditions), making it perfect for areas that are too damp for other plants. This robust shrub reaches a mature size of approximately 6 feet tall and 8 feet wide, with disease-resistant, medium-green foliage that keeps it looking fresh and healthy throughout the growing season. While it prefers consistently moist conditions, it does not tolerate standing water, so ensure proper drainage when planting.
